I have THREE FREE TRAININGS I am recording and publishing on the website over the next few weeks!
– Each training video includes PDF slides, captions, and written transcript so it is easy to follow for all learners. They also include lots of real world examples, hands on activities, and reflective questions to test your knowledge.
– All three trainings are presented in a calm, encouraging, and easy to understand pace without flash animations, loud music, crazy video graphics, or sensory distractions! (Think more “PBS Special” and less “Mountain Dew commercial”.)
– The trainings have been intentionally written so they are accessible for any adult with at least a 6th grade education. All large words, buzz words, and industry phrases are clearly defined on screen and broken down in the included glossary!
The topics are:
1. How to Spot Politically Biased or Misleading News
Have you ever wondered how to tell if your favorite news source has changed reporting standards towards biased news content based on political pressure?
In this training, you will learn about the difference between news facts and news opinions, understand misinformation and disinformation, learn to identify 5 different signals for bias, and learn quick methods for checking sources, verifying facts, and spotting fake photos and videos. (45 minutes)
2. Decoding Daily Headlines
Don’t be the Facebook Aunt who writes crazy posts because you misunderstood the headline of the article you are sharing.
In this training you will learn the inside rules used for writing news and digital headlines so you can decode their meaning, understand what a “hook” is, learn to read headlines as insight instead of fact, and review 10 different real headlines to learn the “red flags”. Plus a bonus look into “if it bleeds, it reads” and how tabloids changed the news. (45 minutes)
3. How to Read a News Article
Looking for a training? Send me an email! I am always looking for topics that meet community need.
Together, we break down a collegiate level news article, piece by piece, to test your true comprehension of the story and understanding of the facts given.
Along the way, you will learn about your brains tendency for lexical scanning, the language of journalism, common traps for reading comprehension and how to avoid them, how to declutter sentences, and how “objective distance” is used in the news. (45 minutes)
