When Americans vote for president every four years, they’re not actually voting for the president.

They’re voting for a group of people called electors who make up the Electoral College. These electors are the ones who officially choose the president and vice president of the United States.

The system might sound confusing, or even unnecessary, but it was designed this way for specific reasons that go all the way back to the country’s founding in the 1780s.
