We’ve been tricked.
Every four years, we get whipped into a frenzy over the presidential election. Red versus blue. Democracy versus collapse. Like watching the Super Bowl if the halftime show was sponsored by existential dread. But while we’re doom-scrolling CNN and yelling at MSNBC like it’s reality TV, something way more impactful is happening quietly, right outside your front door.
It’s called local government, and it’s making decisions that affect your daily life in ways the president never will. We’re talking about school boards, city councils, budget committees, and zoning boards: the people who decide how far you drive to work, what your kids learn in school, and whether your street floods every time it rains.
And guess what? Hardly anybody votes in these elections. According to the Yankelovich Center for Social Science Research at UC San Diego, the stats for local elections are abysmal…
